You’re Not Imagining It – That Spot Lock Drift Keeps Getting Worse
Last week a customer called me about his Minn Kota Ulterra 2020. He was frustrated – “Spot Lock won’t hold, the deploy arm sounds rough, and I’ve already spent $400 on parts.” Sound familiar?
I hear this story roughly twice a month. And look – the Ulterra series (especially the 80‑pound 24v models) is a solid piece of gear. But when it underperforms, the fix rarely is a simple part swap. That’s where the real cost hides.
The 24v Question Everyone Misses
Let’s talk about 24v Minn Kota Ulterra 80 setups. I’ve reviewed over 200 Ulterra units in Q1–Q3 2024 alone. The single most common issue? Under‑powered house battery banks.
People buy a 24v Ulterra, wire it to two 12v batteries in series, and assume “that’s it.” But if one battery is even 10% weaker than the other, voltage sag at the motor can drop below 22v under load. That triggers erratic Spot Lock, slower response, and premature control board wear.

Hidden Extra: The Livescope Mount and Manual Deploy
Another blind spot: integrated Livescope/360 transducer mounts. If you’ve added a Livescope to your Ulterra Quest or an older Ulterra 2020, make sure the mount doesn’t interfere with the deploy mechanism. I’ve seen two units where the mount bracket rubbed the manual deploy handle, causing intermittent deploy failures. The owner blamed the motor – but the real issue was a $30 bracket misalignment.
That’s the kind of thing that makes a $1,200 trolling motor feel like a lemon.
Bottom Line – It’s Not About the Sticker Price
When people ask me, “Should I buy the Ulterra or go with something cheaper?” I always ask back: “What’s your total cost plan for the next three years?”
The Ulterra 2020 lists around $1,800 (price checked January 2025). A “bargain” mount might be $1,100. But if you factor in that you’ll likely need a new house battery bank ($250–$400), a proper gauge wiring kit ($60), and maybe a professional install ($150–$200), that $1,100 unit quickly becomes $1,560 – and you still have inferior performance and lower resale value.
Plus, with the Ulterra, you get manual deploy redundancy. When the electric deploy fails at a bad time (it happens), being able to pull the manual release saves your day. The cheaper alternatives rarely have that.
One More Thing – That “is chrisley alive” Search
I’ve seen weird search queries land on our support page. “Is chrisley alive?” – no idea. But if your Ulterra feels “dead” when you hit the button, check your battery first. That’s probably the source of 80% of the “no deploy” cases we see. Save yourself the diagnostic fee.
The Takeaway: Make One Change Before Calling Support
Before you swap any part or blame the motor: check your battery voltage under load with a multimeter. Ideally, after a full charge, let the motor run for 30 seconds on Spot Lock, then read the voltage at the Ulterra power cable. Below 23.5v? Your bank is weak. Upgrade it – it’s the cheapest fix you’ll ever make.
I no longer sign off on any Ulterra installation that doesn’t include a voltage measurement in the acceptance checklist. It’s that important. And it saved my customer $900. Simple.
