Minn Kota Ulterra Buying Checklist: Riptide 80, i-Pilot, and Manual Deploy

If you're getting ready to order an Ulterra for a boat you run hard, this checklist will keep you from paying for features you don't need—or skipping options you'll regret later.

I'm the procurement manager for a 14-boat saltwater guide outfit on the Texas Gulf Coast. I've overseen a marine equipment budget of roughly $48,000 a year for seven years, and in that time I've signed off on 30-plus trolling motor purchases and rebuilds. This is the buying list I use when we spec a Riptide Ulterra 80 / i-Pilot. It's not the only way to buy one, but it's the process that keeps our boats fishing instead of sitting at the dock.

Who should use this checklist

Use this if you're buying for a charter operation, a fishing club, or your own boat if you spend more than 100 hours a year on the water. If you're a weekend angler who puts in 15 days a season, some of these checks will feel like overkill. You may still want to read Step 4 about batteries—that's where the silence lives.

Step 1: Confirm the configuration before you look at price

You can't evaluate a quote until you know three things: thrust, shaft length, and voltage. For our 19-to-23-foot center consoles, the Riptide Ulterra 80 with i-Pilot is the usual spec. It runs on 24V and has enough thrust to hold position in wind and current. On a lighter 17-footer, 80 lb of thrust is more motor than necessary. The extra weight at the bow plus the battery bank will cost you fuel and trailer capacity. If you don't need it, don't pay for it.

Check the numbers against Minn Kota's published shaft length chart. Measure from the top of your gunwale to the waterline at your normal trim angle. Then decide voltage. A 24V system means two 12V batteries in series. A 36V system means three. That isn't just a motor decision; it's a rewiring decision.

Step 2: Get a quote for the complete package, not the head unit

When a dealer quotes a Riptide Ulterra 80 with i-Pilot, ask him to list every physical item included. Our first order included two motors and zero circuit breakers. I'd assumed breakers were standard. They weren't.

Typical omissions from attention-grabbing prices:

  • Quick-release bracket
  • Power circuit breaker or fuse
  • Plug-and-play power connector
  • Second remote
  • Transducer adapter if you're mounting a Livescope or 360

What most people don't realize is that the i-Pilot remote is paired to one motor from the factory. If you standardize on Ulterra across a fleet, one spare remote per two boats is enough. If you add the spare at initial purchase, you'll pay less than buying it later as a warranty part order. Usually.

Step 3: Understand what Ulterra manual deploy is really there for

Ulterra is known for automatic stow and deploy. The manual deploy feature is an emergency override for when the power is off or the actuator is acting up. It's not a manual operation mode.

For our crew, automatic deploy reduced a specific type of damage: guides pulling onto a trailer with the motor still down. Pressing a button to fold the motor up is a lot harder to forget than bending over to release a clamp. But the auto mechanism adds a component that can fail. I don't have hard data on actuator failure rates across all Ulterra units, but in our fleet of eight, the only actuator that needed replacement was on a boat with chronically low battery voltage. If your operation can't keep batteries charged, an auto-deploy motor will eventually disappoint you.

Step 4: Budget the battery bank before you believe the price

Nobody is hiding the motor price. The mystery is in what your boat needs to run it.

For the Riptide Ulterra 80, plan on two deep-cycle 12V batteries wired in series. AGM or lithium will cost more upfront but weigh less and last longer if you discharge them properly. Add a marine battery charger, heavy gauge wire, terminal protectors, and a breaker. If you're installing on a boat with a single 12V system, you may need to separate the trolling bank from the cranking battery and upgrade the charging path.

We didn't have a formal battery specification process when we started buying these. By the third install where the power faded after two hours, I made a rule: every quote must include a battery recommendation, the amp-hour capacity for four hours of trolling, and the correct wire gauge. That one rule cut our voltage-drop callbacks in half. Maybe more than half. I didn't track it precisely.

Step 5: Compare five-year cost, not invoice price

Let's talk about Terrova for a second. On paper, a Riptide Terrova with i-Pilot usually costs less than an equivalent Ulterra. If you're comparing by sticker price, Terrova looks better. But in our fleet, the Terrova's manual clamp caused problems when guides didn't secure the motor before trailering. We paid for two broken mounts in one season. The Ulterra's power stow eliminated that exact failure mode.

That doesn't make Ulterra better. It makes it better for our specific crew.

If you have an attentive crew and want to reduce the number of electrical components, a Terrova may be the smarter buy. Or if you're mainly in shallow water and need to trim the motor up constantly, you'll probably want a simpler mechanical setup. No shame in that.

Step 6: Verify local service support before you sign

Ulterra motors don't have a bad reputation in our experience. But when something does break, you don't want a dealer who has to order every part from a warehouse in another state.

Ask potential dealers whether they stock the most common parts for Ulterra: the stow/deploy actuator, the remote, and the power cable. If they say they have to order it, that might mean two weeks of downtime for your boat. If you're running a charter schedule, two weeks is real money.

What this checklist won't tell you

This process works for us because we run saltwater center consoles from dock to fishing grounds. If you're fishing grass flats in a shallow skiff, constantly raising the motor to clear mats, an automatic stow/deploy head can be slower than a manual system. In that case, a cable-steer or a simpler electric-steer motor might serve you better.

The honest answer is: there is no best trolling motor. There's only the motor that earns its keep in your water, with your crew, inside your maintenance budget.
