Minn Kota Ulterra Problems in 2019: A Quality Inspector's Straight Answers

Every year I review a few hundred trolling motors, mounts, and installs for our shop. The 2019 Minn Kota Ulterra comes up more than almost any other model—mostly from owners who bought used and got burned. So here are the questions I actually get asked, answered from the quality side of the table. No marketing fluff.

1. What were the most common 2019 Ulterra problems?

Honestly, two issues dominate: Spot Lock drift and deploy motor failures. The 2019 batch had a known GPS antenna ground issue that made Spot Lock wander over time—not every unit, but enough that we saw a clear pattern. And the auto deploy/stow mechanism had a seal that allowed moisture to reach the motor contacts, which caused intermittent "stuck halfway" behavior.

From my chair, the failures weren't bad design. It was inconsistent assembly and seal application. I've seen 2019 units with zero issues after five years. I've also seen one with corrosion inside the head after one season. That's the quality-control lottery you don't want to play.

2. Is the Ulterra Link worth the extra cost?

Depends on your total-cost thinking. The Link version adds chart-plotter integration—contour following, route recording, and the ability to adjust the motor from your fish finder. If you fish deep structure or river ledges, that's genuinely useful. If you mainly drop anchor and fish points, the non-Link i-Pilot does the job.

Here's the catch: retrofitting Link later is way more expensive than buying it upfront. I'm not a software engineer, so I can't speak to the firmware internals. What I can tell you from a purchasing perspective is that the Link usually holds resale value better too. So the real question isn't "is it worth it?" It's "will you use it?"

3. Should I buy a used 2019 Ulterra?

I had a customer named Jonah bring in a used 2019 Ulterra last fall. He paid $850 for it because the seller said "Spot Lock just drifts a little—probably needs a software update." Jonah figured he was saving $500 vs new. Actual repair cost: $280 for the GPS board, $140 labor, and $85 for a new heading sensor. That's $505. He spent more than he saved, and the motor still had corrosion risk from the original seal.

That's what I mean by total cost. That cheap motor turned into a Bentley GT-sized repair bill on a trolling motor. If you're looking at a used 2019, factor in the worst-case repair before you commit. And don't take "it's a quick fix" from a stranger as a fact.

4. How can I tell if a 2019 Ulterra has been updated?

Check the serial number first. Then, if the seller allows it, open the head and look at the GPS antenna area. The original seal was thin and dark gray. Factory-updated units usually have a thicker white or yellow RTV silicone applied. That's not a guarantee, but it's a strong visual indicator.

And get service records. If the seller says "no issues," ask for the last inspection receipt. Per FTC guidelines, claims about a product's condition need to be truthful and substantiated. That doesn't mean you should lawyer up—it means a verbal "it's fine" isn't worth much. Get it in writing, or assume it's an original 2019 spec.

5. Manual deploy vs power deploy: is manual a downgrade?

No—actually, in the 2019 context, it's an upgrade for reliability. The auto deploy mechanism was the main failure point on that model. When Minn Kota added manual deploy as an option on later Ulterra designs, it was a direct response to that. Manual deploy removes a $400 motor assembly from the TCO equation.

Nobody buys the manual version for convenience. They buy it for the one time power deploy fails at the boat ramp. If you fish alone, power deploy is nice. If you want the lowest cost of ownership over eight years, manual deploy is the safer call.

6. What does a quality inspector check before accepting an Ulterra?

This is what I run on any used or refurbished Ulterra before I'd sign off on it:

  • Spot Lock hold test—set it in wind and watch how much it wanders over 5 minutes.
  • Current draw—compare to spec. Higher-than-normal draw points to bearing or brake issues.
  • Head moisture—open the compartment and look for water stains or corroded terminals.
  • Transducer mount clearance—the mount has to stay clear of the i-Pilot Link GPS antenna, or you'll lose heading lock.

I'm not an electrical engineer, so I don't guess on motor winding health. But those four checks catch most of the expensive failures before they happen.

7. Did the 2019 problems get fixed in later models?

Yeah, mostly. The 2020 units had a revised GPS antenna seal, and by 2021 the module itself changed. The deploy motor seal was also improved. But that doesn't help you if you're staring at a 2019 that still has original parts.

If you already own a 2019 Ulterra, check whether it was serviced under a warranty or recall claim. Oh, and one more thing: if you're comparing a 2019 to a newer Terrova or Ultrex, don't assume "newer" means automatically better. Test them on the water. The published specs don't tell you how the motor feels in a 2-foot chop. (Should mention: we carry both, so I've done that comparison side by side.
