Ever spec'd out a $2,800 trolling motor and forgot about the $450 in mounting hardware and rigging labor until it hit the credit card? Yeah. I'm the guy who catches that line item. Here's the thing: the Ulterra is a solid engine hoist on top of a great GPS anchor. But it's got quirks. So let's answer the questions customers actually ask us at the counter.

Is the Ulterra actually worth the upgrade over a Terrova?

Honestly, it depends. If you're fishing docks or structure and you're standing on the bow, the auto stow/deploy is a total game changer. You don't have to lean over the bow and wrestle a 65lb slide hammer of a motor back onto the deck when the waves start kicking.

But from a cost perspective? The Terrova does the same Spot Lock and i-Pilot functions. You're paying a premium for the electric lift and the integrated drive. The reliability of the mechanical lift mechanism is pretty good now—the 2024/2025 models fixed the early actuator issues we saw in 2019. But it's a moving part. Moving parts break. Serviceable, though.

Cabela's vs a local dealer: who should I buy my Ulterra from?

Cabela's gets a lot of floor space for good reason. They move massive volume, so their stock turns fast. In 2024, I saw a Cabela's exclusive bundle for the Ulterra Quest that included the remote and a free zero-turn mount. That's a great value.

My hesitation? The return policy is smooth, but the people on the floor don't always know the wiring differences between a 24V and 36V system. I've had customers show up with a Cabela's box and a dead battery because the store sold them a 12V battery for a 36V motor. (That's a $500 mistake, by the way.) If you buy at Cabela's, at least double-check the system before you install it.

How do I tighten the Ulterra belt on my own?

You can do this. It's a 20-minute job if you're careful. First, disconnect the battery. Always. Next, remove the decorative shroud. It's held in by a few 8mm bolts and maybe a trim panel. Once that's off, you'll see the pulley assembly.

Loosen the two pivot bolts on the motor bracket, not the main mount bolts. Then use the tensioner screw on the back to adjust the belt deflection. You're aiming for about 1/8 inch of play in the middle span. Push down—firmly, but not brutal. If it feels like a guitar string, you're too tight and you'll kill the main shaft bearing. If it feels like a rubber band, you're too loose and the motor will slip under load.

Re-tighten the pivot bolts and re-test. If it squeals on startup, you're still loose. If it hums, you're just right.

What hidden costs should I budget for with the Ulterra?

Great question, because the price tag isn't the price. Here's the real math:

  • Mounting hardware (brackets, bolts, transducer mount): $150 - $250
  • Wiring kit (marine-grade wires, breaker, lugs): $100 - $200
  • Labor to rig it if you're not DIY (2-4 hours): $200 - $400
  • Propeller replacement (you will hit a log eventually): $45 - $90
  • Belt replacement (every 2-3 seasons or after serious strain): $50 - $90

See the pattern? The motor is the cheap part. Budget an extra 20% for rigging and you're in good shape.

Is the 'manual deploy' option a workaround or a failure point?

Nobody ever asks me this until it's 6 PM, windy, and their auto deploy is jammed. On the Ulterra, you can manually raise and lower the motor if the actuator fails, which is a lifesaver to get you home. It's not hard. You basically pull a locking pin that disengages the actuator, so you can lift it manually.

But understand the catch: if you manually deploy it, the i-Pilot position sensor gets a little confused. You might need to re-calibrate it or cycle the power to clear the error code. So it's a backup, not a daily feature.

What about the integrated Livescope or 360 mount?

The pure Garmin integration is one of the biggest reasons to pick an Ulterra over a Terrova. On the Ultrex, you have to buy a separate transducer mount that hangs off the front. The Ulterra Quest has a clean, integrated channel. That's a $200 - $300 accessory you're basically borrowing.

From a cost standpoint, just make sure your Garmin unit is compatible. If you have an older Garmin 93sv, don't assume the network cables will be identical to the new Livescope Plus system. You'll need an adapter cable. It's a $30 part—just verify before you order.

Should I get the 24V or the 36V Ulterra?

This isn't a performance question, it's a physics question. The 24V system runs cooler and lasts longer on a single charge if you're just hunting docks. The 36V system gives you the raw thrust when you're working into a strong current on windy days.

My rule: if your boat is over 20 feet or you're fishing big water (like Erie or Champlain), go 36V. If you're fishing a 17-foot bass boat, 24V is plenty and it'll save you about $400 on the battery bank and wiring.

Look, I'm not going to tell you to buy the cheapest motor. The Ulterra is a premium piece of equipment. But I'll tell you to buy the right one. Know the total cost, know the moving parts, and don't be afraid to get your hands dirty. An informed customer is my favorite customer—you ask better questions and you don't blame me when you upgrade to a 4-bank charger without checking your amp draw first.
