This was accurate as of March 2025. Battery tech changes, but the load-test principle does not.
Step 2: Check the stow/deploy switch and its ground
The switch is a common failure, but not always because the switch is bad. In one 2022 job, I replaced a switch assembly that looked fine. It still failed. The real issue was a corroded ground connection in the plug. The switch was acting like a gate with no fence on the other side. Check the ground first.
Disconnect the battery. Remove the switch panel. Measure continuity between the switch output and the controller input. Then check continuity between the controller ground and battery negative. If either reading is unstable, clean the connection and retest.
Step 3: Inspect the deploy/stow gear and clutch
If the motor makes a grinding sound for a second and then stops, don't keep pressing the button. This is where I made my worst mistake. I pressed deploy repeatedly on a customer's motor, thinking I could power through a stuck gear. That turned a $120 gear repair into a $700 actuator replacement.

Step 5: Inspect the transducer mount and cable routing
This is the step most people ignore. A Livescope or 360 transducer mount can shift after a season of fishing. If the transducer hangs low, it can catch on the bow during auto deploy. The motor starts to deploy, hits the transducer, thinks it has encountered an obstruction, and stops.
Check the transducer mount bolts and the cable's path. Make sure nothing is pinched between the mount and the motor shaft. I've had two jobs where the 'auto deploy problem' was actually a transducer cable trapped in the pivot. It looked fine from the outside. The reality was a cable that had worked loose and wrapped around the shaft.
Step 6: Reset and observe
After you've checked power, switches, mechanical drive, error codes, and mounts, do a full reset. Disconnect the battery, wait 10 minutes, reconnect, and then run a complete deploy/stow cycle on the trailer. Watch the motor through the entire cycle. Don't walk away.
What I mean is that a full cycle reveals issues that a partial bench test won't. The motor can deploy fine but fail on stow. It can go down fine on land and fail in the water because of hydraulic drag. The only way to know is to observe the whole sequence.
