Before You Buy: A Procurement Checklist for the Minn Kota Ulterra Trolling Motor

If you're the person responsible for ordering a Minn Kota Ulterra for your company's fleet—whether it's for a service vessel, a guide boat, or a research platform—this list is for you. I manage purchasing for a mid-sized marine operations company, about $150k annually across a dozen vendors. Over the past few years, I've processed orders for roughly 40 trolling motors, mostly the Ulterra 24v 80lb models. If you're dealing with a single motor for a personal boat, some of this might be overkill. But if you're buying for a business, these steps save headaches.

Step 1: Verify the Exact Model and Voltage

This sounds obvious, but it's where most mistakes happen. The spec sheet says "Minn Kota Ulterra 80/US2 i-Pilot Link 60"—but is that the 24v or 36v version? The Minn Kota Ulterra 24v 80lb is a common sweet spot for 18-20 foot boats, but if your vessel requires more thrust or a different shaft length, you'll get the wrong unit.

Key verification points:

  • Voltage: 24v vs 36v. Check your boat's existing battery bank. Swapping voltage often means new batteries and wiring.
  • Shaft length: 60-inch vs 72-inch. Measure your bow height from waterline to mounting surface. A too-short shaft means porpoising; too long is just awkward.
  • GPS/Networking: Does it come with i-Pilot Link, or just i-Pilot? Link integrates with compatible fish finders (like Humminbird). If your team uses a different brand (e.g., Lowrance or Garmin), confirm compatibility.

I once ordered what I thought was the right model—turned out it was a 36v unit when we had 24v batteries. That was a $2,800 mistake and a two-week delay. I now send a photo of the current motor's spec plate to the vendor before ordering.

Step 2: Confirm the Transducer Mount Compatibility

The Ulterra's integrated Livescope/360 transducer mount is a big selling point for a lot of our crews. But here's the thing: not every Ulterra comes with the mount pre-installed, and not every mount works with every transducer.

What to ask the vendor:

  • "Is the Livescope/360 mount included, or is it a separate accessory?"

  • "Will the mount work with my existing fish finder setup?"

Honestly, I'm still not 100% sure why compatibility varies between years of the same model. My best guess is that Minn Kota updated the mount design without changing the product name. I've had to return two mounts because they didn't fit the customer's transducer. Now I always ask the vendor to confirm by serial number.

Step 3: Evaluate the Manual Deploy Feature

A lot of our guys like the manual deploy option on the Ulterra Quest. The auto-deploy is great when it works, but if you're in cold weather or dealing with saltwater corrosion, manual is more reliable. This is one of those tradeoffs where efficiency = knowing when to take the simpler route.

Checklist for this step:

  • Does the specific model you're ordering include manual deploy? (Not all do.)
  • If manual deploy is a priority, confirm it's not an aftermarket add-on that voids the warranty.
  • Ask if the motor's stow/deploy mechanism has any known recalls or service bulletins. A quick check on Minn Kota's site can save you a call later.

The numbers said auto-deploy was faster and more "modern." But after seeing three units fail on guide boats in one season, my gut said manual was safer for our heavy-use fleet. I went with manual deploy models, and we've had zero deployment issues since. Sometimes the less advanced option is more reliable.

Step 4: Vet the Vendor—Not Just the Price

This is where the procurement part really kicks in. You'll see a range of prices online for the Minn Kota Ulterra 24v 80lb. But the cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest total cost.

What I check now (after that $2,400 expense rejection story):

  • Invoicing capability: Can they send a proper invoice with line items and your PO number? Handwritten receipts will get rejected by finance.
  • Return policy: What happens if the unit arrives damaged or is the wrong model? A 15% restocking fee eats your savings.
  • Warranty service: Are they an authorized Minn Kota service center? If not, your warranty may require shipping to a different location. Lead time matters.
  • Stock availability: "In stock" sometimes means "we can order it." Ask for the lead time. I've seen "3-5 days" turn into "it's backordered 8 weeks."

I went back and forth between a big online retailer and a regional dealer for about a week. The online retailer was $200 cheaper. The regional dealer had a service center and could get us a unit in 4 days. I chose the dealer. When a motor arrived with a cracked housing, they replaced it same-day. The online retailer would have taken a week.

Step 5: Plan for Installation and Accessories

The motor itself is just the start. You'll need mounting brackets, wiring kits, and potentially a new battery charger. The Ulterra connects to your boat's electrical system, and mismatched components cause problems.

Installation checklist:

  • Mounting plate: Does your boat have a Minn Kota Quick Release bracket, or do you need to buy one? The Ulterra fits standard MKA-32 or MKA-53 plates, but confirm.
  • Wiring gauge: The 24v 80lb model needs 6 AWG or thicker wire if running more than 15 feet. Undersized wire causes voltage drop and poor performance.
  • Circuit breaker: Minn Kota recommends a 60-amp breaker for the 80lb model. Check if one is included.
  • Battery requirements: Two 12v deep-cycle batteries (Group 27 or 31). If your boat currently uses one battery, you'll need to add another and reconfigure the setup.

I once had a vendor install a motor without checking the wire gauge. The motor ran fine for a month, then started cutting out at full speed. The 10 AWG wire was overheating. We had to rip out the wiring and redo it. Total downtime: two days. I should have specified the wire gauge in the purchase order.

A Few Other Things I've Learned

My experience is based on about 40 orders for Ulterra and Quest models, mostly for 22-24 foot center consoles. If you're outfitting a small jon boat or a large offshore vessel, your experience might differ.

  • The "is Eddie going out of business?" question—that's a common worry with any brand that gets acquired. Minn Kota is owned by Johnson Outdoors, a publicly traded company (JOUT). As of early 2025, there's no sign they're going anywhere. But I always check the SEC filings for any big news before placing a large order.
  • Millennium and Peregrine are sometimes mentioned alongside Ulterra. I've never fully understood why Peregrine comes up in marine motor discussions—might be a different industry. If you're looking at those terms in a search, make sure you're on the right product page.
  • Warranty registration: Do it immediately. Minn Kota requires registration within 30 days of purchase. I create a digital folder with the invoice, serial number, and registration confirmation for every motor we buy.

That's my checklist. Take it from someone who's had motors arrive wrong, wires melt, and invoices rejected—spending an extra hour on these steps upfront saves days and dollars later.
