What Fish Finder Works with Minn Kota Ulterra? A Buyer’s Honest Take

Short answer: It depends on your Ulterra model, but most major fish finders (Humminbird, Garmin, Lowrance) can be integrated—with one catch.

Look, I manage orders for a 12-person marine services company—roughly $80,000 annually across 6 vendors. When I took over purchasing in 2020, one of the first things I fielded was: "What fish finder works with that new Ulterra we just got?"

Here's the short version: The Ulterra's built-in i-Pilot link works natively with Humminbird units (SOLIX, HELIX, etc.). For Garmin or Lowrance, you need an adapter—and for LiveScope integration, you're looking at a specific mount. But the real gotcha? Not all Ulterra models have the same mounting bracket. We found this out the hard way.

What we learned (the expensive way)

In March 2024, our lead tech requested a new Ulterra Quest model. He assumed the fish finder compatibility was identical to the older Ulterra we'd been using. It wasn't. The Ulterra Quest uses a different mounting bracket than the standard Ulterra, and the LiveScope transducer mount we had in stock didn't fit. That cost us $400 in rush shipping for the correct bracket, plus a day of downtime.

So here's what I can tell you based on our orders and installs:

1. Humminbird is the plug-and-play option

If you're using a Humminbird fish finder, the integration is seamless. The i-Pilot link cable connects directly, and you get live control of Spot Lock, jog, and route recording from the graph. We've installed probably 20+ of these combos. No adapter needed—just the correct Ethernet cable.

2. For Garmin or Lowrance, you need an adapter

We use Garmin units on our service vessels because of the mapping. The Ulterra works with them, but you need a Minn Kota MKR-46 adapter cable. I've bought three of these so far—about $30 each. The setup is straightforward: connect the adapter to the Ulterra's accessory port, then to the NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000 network on the fish finder.

But here's the nuance: the MKR-46 only works with certain Garmin models (echomap, GPSMAP) and not all Lowrance units (Elite Ti2 and above). I wish I'd had a compatibility list when I started ordering. My sense is that about 80% of recent fish finders work, but the 20% that don't are older models with proprietary connectors.

3. LiveScope integration is its own beast

This is the big one. If you want to mount a Garmin LiveScope transducer to your Ulterra, you need a dedicated LiveScope mount—not just any trolling motor mount. The standard Ulterra transducer bracket doesn't have the clearance or angle for the LiveScope LVS32/LVS34 transducer.

We bought a Fish T-Rex Universal Adjustable LiveScope Mount in January 2024 ($189 at the time). It attaches to the Ulterra's shaft and extends the transducer pod out. Worked fine, but it adds weight and slightly affects trolling balance. That's not a deal-breaker for us, but I can see why some anglers prefer the factory Garmin trolling motor kit instead.

What I'd do differently (looking back)

If I could redo that first order in 2020, I'd have checked the Ulterra model number and the fish finder's connection type before buying any adapters. The Ulterra manual (available on minnkota-motor.com) lists compatible units, but it's not always up-to-date. Instead, I recommend:

  • For Humminbird users: Just get the Ethernet cable (MKR-16 for some models). Done.
  • For Garmin/Lowrance users: Verify the specific model number against the MKR-46 compatibility list. I've called Minn Kota support twice—they're responsive but the list changes quarterly.
  • For LiveScope: Buy the mount before the motor, not after. Budget $180–$250 for a good mount plus possible installation labor.

The surprising bit: manual deploy vs. auto deploy

This is the thing most guides don't mention. The Ulterra's manual deploy feature (which we like for reliability) actually affects fish finder compatibility in one niche way: the manual deploy model has a different cable routing path than the auto deploy. If you're running a Livescope cable through the shaft, the manual deploy version has an extra grommet you need to get past. We had to redneck-engineer ours with a zip tie—not my proudest moment.

Boundary conditions (when this advice doesn't apply)

This was accurate as of Q1 2025. The fish finder market changes fast—especially with the introduction of new Garmin and Humminbird models—so verify specific model compatibility before buying adapters. Also, if you're using a Riptide Ulterra (saltwater model), the transducer mount options might differ; we haven't tested those.

One last caveat: I don't have hard data on industry-wide compatibility rates, but based on our 5 years of orders, my sense is that about 85% of fish finders sold in the last 3 years will work with a standard Ulterra with the right adapter. The other 15%? They're usually older units with proprietary connectors or really cheap models without NMEA support.

Bottom line: If you want zero-hassle integration, go with a Humminbird and a compatible Ethernet cable. If you already have a Garmin or Lowrance, the adapter route works—just budget $30 for the cable and verify the model. And if you're adding LiveScope? Don't skip the specialized mount. That's the $400 lesson we lived.
