The Used Minn Kota Ulterra Checklist: 7 Steps I Learned From a $1,200 Mistake

You're looking at a used Minn Kota Ulterra, probably the 80 lbs 24 volt 60 inch model. Maybe you found a deal on the Riptide version, or you're considering a used unit to save cash for accessories. Step 3: The Power-Up Sequence — More Than Just 'Does It Turn On'

Turn on the motor. The head unit should light up. The i-Pilot system (if equipped) should initialize. You'll hear a series of beeps and the display should cycle through a startup screen.

  • The display is clear. No dead pixels. No lines.
  • The startup sequence completes without error codes. Error codes like 'ERR 01' or 'ERR 04' indicate internal electronic faults. I don't have hard data on the exact failure rate of Ulterra motherboards, but based on our repair logs, maybe 1 in 20 used units we see has a startup error.
  • The remote syncs. If it comes with a remote, pair it. Test the buttons. The remote for the i-Pilot system is expensive to replace.

Step 4: Spot Lock Test — The Feature Everyone Wants

This is the big one. Spot Lock is the reason most people want the Ulterra. Test it in the water, or at least in a barrel of water deep enough to submerge the prop. Running it dry for more than a few seconds can damage the seals, so be careful.

  1. Deploy the motor in the water.
  2. Turn on the i-Pilot system.
  3. Press the Spot Lock button on the remote or foot pedal.
  4. The motor should engage and hold position. You'll see the GPS indicator on the display.
  5. Turn the motor off. Press Spot Lock again. It should disengage.

If Spot Lock doesn't engage, or if it engages but the motor doesn't hold position, the GPS module might be faulty. Replacement is doable but costs about $150-250, depending on the year of the motor.

(I should add: I've seen a few cases where Spot Lock worked perfectly for 10 minutes, then failed. The owner said it was 'intermittent'. It was a loose connection on the GPS antenna. So if you can, test it for at least 5 minutes.)

Checklist item: Spot Lock engages, holds position, disengages cleanly. Test for at least 5 minutes.

Step 5: The Propeller Driveshaft Seal Check — The Hidden Cost

This is the step that catches a lot of people. After the power test, let the motor sit for 10 minutes. Then check the lower unit for oil leaks. Look at the seam where the driveshaft exits the gearbox. If there's any oil residue, the seal is compromised.

Also check the propeller shaft for vertical play. Grab the prop and try to move it up and down. Any play at all means the bearings are worn. This is a $80-150 repair depending on whether you do it yourself or bring it to a shop.

Checklist item: No oil leaks from the lower unit. No vertical play in the propeller shaft.

Step 6: The Transducer Mount — If It Has One, Check It

Many used Ulterra units come with a transducer mount for Livescope or 360. Pop the mounting screws and see if the bracket is cracked. These brackets are notorious for breaking if the boat hits a log or runs aground.

Check the transducer itself. Any cracks in the housing? The element looks clear? A damaged transducer will give poor sonar returns.

Checklist item: Transducer mount bracket is intact. Transducer housing is not cracked.

To be fair, you can always buy a new mount for about $40, but it's a pain to source the right model. The used market is full of mismatched parts.

Step 7: Verify The Serial Number — This Is Non-Negotiable

Find the serial number on the motor. It's usually on the back of the head unit or on a sticker near the power cord. Check that it hasn't been tampered with. A missing or altered serial number means the motor is likely stolen. Don't buy it.

If the serial is clean, you can call Minn Kota support or check online to verify the year and make sure there aren't any open recalls. This was true 10 years ago when verifying a used motor required a phone call. Today, you can do it online in 2 minutes, but most people skip it.

I get why people skip this—it feels paranoid. But a colleague of mine bought a used Ulterra that turned out to have an open safety recall for the foot pedal. The seller didn't disclose it. The recall fix was free at an authorized dealer, but it took three weeks to get the parts.

Checklist item: Serial number present and clear. Verified against available databases. No open recalls.

Final Notes: What This Checklist Won't Tell You

This checklist is for pre-purchase inspection only. It won't tell you if the motor has 50 hours or 500 hours on it. It won't tell you if the previous owner used it in salt water (though the Riptide models are designed for it, seals still wear faster). It won't tell you if the motor has been submerged. (If it has, walk away—the electronics are likely compromised.)

And here's the thing: no checklist covers everything. The checklist approach is about catching the most common, most expensive problems. It's not guaranteed.
