How to Replace Your Minn Kota Ulterra Control Board and Pair the i-Pilot Remote (A Real-World Guide from an Admin Buyer)

  3. While the remote is flashing, turn the motor power back on.

If it doesn't pair, repeat the sequence but with the motor in deploy mode (arm extended). On some Ulterra versions, the pairing only works when the motor is deployed. This is the step nearly every online guide forgets. I went back and forth between the standard procedure and this variant for about 40 minutes. Ultimately, deploying the arm solved it.

Step 6: Test Everything (Including Spot Lock)

Once paired, cycle through all functions: stow, deploy, spot lock, and speed control. Pay special attention to Spot Lock—board replacements can sometimes misalign the GPS antenna, causing drift. If your boat drifts more than 5 feet, recalibrate the compass per the user manual. I keep a copy of the manual saved on my phone for exactly this reason.

Common Mistakes & Gotchas

  • Using the wrong power source: The Ulterra requires 12V DC only. I've seen people accidentally connect a 24V system and fry the board instantly.
  • Skipping the firmware update: New boards sometimes have outdated firmware. Download the latest from Minn Kota's site using the USB port (if available). The 2024 firmware added better spot-lock accuracy—basically a free upgrade.
  • Ignoring the green mode: The Ulterra has a 'Green' energy-saving mode that reduces GPS polling frequency. It's great for long days on the water, but if you forget to disable it during testing, you might think the motor is defective.
